Thomas Breuer ist ein experimentell arbeitender elektronischer Musiker und Künstler. Er studierte Bildende Kunst an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf bei Jannis Kounellis (Meisterschüler) sowie Kunstwissenschaft und Medientheorie an der HFG Karlsruhe.
Seit 2015 konzentriert sich seine Arbeit auf modulare Synthesizer, insbesondere auf das SERGE-System sowie selbstgebaute Schaltungen. Sein vom (kalkulierten) Zufall gesteuertes Klangwerk entsteht im Studio, bei Improvisationen oder Live-Performances.
Im Rahmen von Klanginstallationen arbeitet Thomas Breuer mit generativen Patches, d.h. automatisch ablaufenden modularen Schaltungen, die sich innerhalb von Stunden oder auch Tagen in ständiger Veränderung zu komplexen organischen Klangstrukturen entwickeln.
Ausgangspunkt seiner kompositorischen und performativen Arbeit ist das SERGE Modularsystem. Spezielle Verfahren im Umgang mit der analogen Technik ermöglichen es Thomas Breuer klangliche Spektren zu erzeugen, die dem organischen Resonanzverhalten akustischer Instrumente nahe kommen.
Durch die Verwendung von Holz als akustisches Resonanzmaterial, gewinnen ab 2022 die synthetisch erzeugten Klänge ein zusätzliches organisches Timbre. Aktuell arbeitet Thomas Breuer an verschiedenen Typen von Holzresonatoren, die über Schallwandler angesteuert werden und den Klang, vergleichbar mit einem akustischen Seiteninstrument, dreidimensional im Raum verteilen.
Seit 2021 organisiert und kuratiert Thomas Breuer das von ihm etablierte Soundfestival StromWandlungSchall als Platform für experimentelle elektronische Musik im süddeutschen Raum.

Thomas Breuer
is an electronic musician and experimental artist.
He studied fine arts at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Jannis Kounellis (master student) as well as Art Research and Media Theory at the HFG Karlsruhe.
Since 2015 he focused on modular synthesizers, especially the SERGE system and self-made circuits. In 2019 he begins working under the project name VACTROLOG.
His sonic work, which is controlled by (calculated) chance, is created in the studio, during improvisations or live performances.
Sometimes he works with generative circuits and sound installations, i.e. automatically running modular patches that develop into organic sound structures within hours or days.
The starting point for his compositional and performative work is the SERGE modular system. Special processes in dealing with this analogue technology enable Thomas Breuer to generate sound spectra that come close to the organic resonance behavior of acoustic instruments.
By exploring wood as an acoustic resonance material, the synthetically generated sounds will gain an organic timbre. Thomas Breuer is currently working on various types of wooden resonators, which are controlled by sound transducer to distribute the sound three-dimensionally in space, comparable to an acoustic instrument.
Since 2021, Thomas Breuer has been organizing and curating the sound festival
StromWandlungSchall, which he established as a platform for experimental electronic music.

Elektronische Musik und Klangerzeuger aller Art begleiten Thomas Breuer bereits seit seiner frühen Jugend. Während seines Kunststudiums konzentrierte er sich Mitte der 1990er Jahre im Bereich der Bildenden Kunst auf 16mm Kurzfilme, Installationen und Malerei. Serien von Rauminstallationen mit Metronomen und polyrhythmischen Verschiebungen waren Vorläufer seiner heutigen experimentellen Arbeiten. Die Thematisierung der (messbaren) Zeit, verschiedenste Formen der Klangsynthese und geloopte Tonaufnahmen spielen bis heute eine bedeutende Rolle. Seit 2013 arbeitet Thomas Breuer vorrangig mit analogen Klangerzeugern. Mit der Umstellung auf das Eurorack Modularsystem und insbesondere das SERGE-System eröffneten sich neue klangliche und experimentelle Dimensionen.
Seit 2019 veröffentlich der Künstler unter dem Projektnamen vactrolog.
Thomas Breuer ist Mitglied im Zentrum für Elektronische Musik (ZeM) und Initiator des Soundevents StromWandlungSchall.

Electronic music and sound generators of all kinds have accompanied Thomas Breuer since his early youth. During his art studies in the mid-1990s he concentrated on 16mm short films, installations and painting in the field of visual arts. Variations of installations with metronomes and their polyrhythmic shifts were forerunners of his current experimental work.
The experience of (measurable) time, various techniques of sound synthesis and looped sound recordings still play an important role today.
From 2013 the artist focused on working with analog sound generators. By changing to the Eurorack modular system and finally the SERGE system, new sonic and experimental dimensions opened up.
In 2019 the artist started publishing under the project name vactrolog.
Thomas Breuer is member of the Center for Electronic Music (ZeM) and initiator of the sound event StromWandlungSchall.
Modular
In der modularelektronischen Klangerzeugung beeinflussen zahlreiche Einzelkomponenten, bewusst gesteuert oder auch zufallsgeneriert, die Entstehung, Verarbeitung und Kombination klanglicher Strukturen.
Die Offenheit der Arbeitsprozesse kommt dabei den Verfahrensweisen des Bildenden Künstlers entgegen. Vergleichbar mit einer skulpturalen, additiven Arbeitsweise, erlaubt die Arbeit im Modularsystem auf einzigartige Weise das Schichten, Kombinieren und Verdichten von Klangelementen. Anders gesagt: Es ist die Arbeit im Prozess, im Fluss der Ereignisse - nicht aber die tonale Strukturierung zwischen einem gesetzten Anfangs- und Endpunkt.
After sometimes long sessions, it's time to let a generative patch run by itself. Sometimes I let the modular system continue playing for hours, sometimes for a day or two.

In modular electronics, numerous individual components, consciously controlled or randomly generated, influence the processing and combination of the sound events.
Working with modular synths is quiet similar to the methods of the visual artist. Comparable to a sculptural, additive way, working in the modular system makes it possible to layer, combine and compress sound elements. Recordings are created in the studio, during modular improvisations and live performances.
Elektrizität
Der Gedanke, elektrische Spannung akustisch erfahrbar zu machen und klanglich bzw. körperhaft zu gestalten ist ein Impuls meiner Arbeit.
Strom, verstanden als jene physikalische (sowie zivilisatorische) Urquelle, tritt in meiner Arbeit an die Stelle tonaler Systemen und harmonischer Strukturen. Klang und Raum werden durch die sensible Einarbeitung
in die örtlichen Bedingungen für die Dauer einer Performance in ein körperhaftes, organisch-akustisches System überführt. Resonanzen kommen und gehen, schlagen sich nieder in der Architektur, verändern den Ort, verändern den Moment, bleiben als Spuren in Erinnerung.
Electricity
The idea of making electrical voltage acoustically tangible and shaping it into sound and physical form is one of the impulses of my work. Electricity, understood as the physical (as well as civilizational) source, takes the place of tonal systems and harmonic structures in my work. Sound and space are transferred into a physical, organic-acoustic system. Resonances come and go, are reflected in the architecture, change the place, change the moment, remain in memory.
